i believe that Darius Miles’ agent will (and should) make an appeal to the players association to pursue action against Portland, unless David Stern steps in and fixes it.
it’s not any team’s decision to shut down a player’s career because they think his injury is beyond recovery. if another team wishes to make an investment in that player, than they should be allowed to do so.
Portland is reaping the consequences for signing Miles to that particular contract. they didn’t have to do it, but they did…and now they’re stuck with the loss. look at the Knicks and Marbury. regardless of what they WANT to do, they have to pay him because it was THEIR contract that allowed Marbury to make that money. now they don’t like it and it’s too doggone bad.
Portland released Darius Miles…now they want to make it seem as if any team attempting to sign him, will only be doing so as a ploy to prevent Portland from being able to sign any free agents over the summer (or perhaps the next 2 summers).
Portland has to take their lumps right now…that’s all there is to it. it’s not even about whether there is any legitimacy to their claim that Miles’ injury should keep him from playing. this is about them not wanting to get hit with that huge loss of money.
Stern NEEDS to step in…and if he doesn’t, i’m sure this will end up in arbitration, with the players association backing Darius Miles.
